According to a recently published report, it is not Apple - as some would expect - that is the top seller of mobile phones, but rather Samsung. After collecting data over a three month span from November 2010 to January 2011, comScore found that Samsung manufactured 24.9 percent of all mobile phones on the market, with LG, Motorola, RIM and Apple following behind.
With their increased computing power, smartphones require a bit more oomph to get going then the typical mobile phone and though operating systems on smartphones vary, Google's Android software is the most popular smartphone platform with a 31.2 percent market share, the report stated; that number is significant because in the prior three month period, Google's Android accounted for only 23.5 percent of the market.
Following Google were RIM at 30.4 percent, Apple at 24.7 percent, Microsoft at 8.0 percent and Palm at 3.2 percent; of those four platforms, only Apple managed to gain market share during the three month period, adding slightly to its market share. RIM, on the other hand, saw its market share decline by 5.4 percent.
