Why is a Cover Letter Important?
A cover letter tells an employer the position that you’re seeking. It shows them why you are qualified for that position.
Your cover letter can explain things that are missing from your resume. If you have gaps in your employment history, if you are changing careers, or if you are conducting a long-distance job-search, a cover letter can help you explain these circumstances in a positive way. Your cover letter can also take the place of an objective on your resume or expand upon it.
When Writing a Cover Letter:
- Address it to a specific individual; use a company’s website to find the right name and title
- Make sure your first paragraph has a strong hook that will grab the reader’s attention
- Choose three key accomplishments to highlight
- Explain why you are the perfect fit for this specific job
- Keep it positive
- End your cover letter by thanking the reader for his or her time and requesting an interview
- Do NOT make any mistakes
- Keep it short; cover letters should be under one page
