Is My Money Safe?
As long as your bank is insured by the FDIC then your money is safe up to $250,000. The FDIC is the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. It is an independent agency of the federal government.
When choosing a bank, make sure it is insured by the FDIC. Not all banks are covered by the FDIC. You need to check with each bank, especially an online-only bank.
FDIC-insured institutions must display an official sign at each teller window or teller station. You can also verify whether an institution is FDIC-insured by searching insured banks on the FDIC’s website or calling the FDIC’s Division of Compliance and Consumer Affairs (DCA) toll-free at 800-934-3342.
