Questions About Collections

Dear Melissa Douros,
As the subject states they have put my brothers unpaid collection accounts on my credit report. Our first and last name is same and middle name is different. Date of birth is 10 years apart. I use to live with my folks 4 years ago where he now lives. He does not have any credit history so they just found me in their records and added his collections to my report. What is the best way to resolve this? I have worked very hard to build my credit history. Until this happened, my credit score was 740. Now its 690. What do I do? It’s not even my fault.

Dear Evan,

This is common also with fathers and sons who are a “senior” or “junior.” The credit bureau receives information and they need to put it somewhere.

The good news is that you can dispute this. Take a photocopy of the front and back of you driver’s license and mail to the credit bureaus with a copy of the credit report. In a typed letter, explain the situation and what needs to be done to have it rectified. The credit bureau must respond to your dispute within ten days with either a resolution or statement that additional time is needed for an investigation.

This situation may seem desperate, but it is easily correctible.
