Every year some of us still brave the crowds and head to the malls on Black Friday. If you’re tempted to try and take your share of savings, follow our common sense rules for surviving the years scariest day of shopping.

5. Plan Ahead. Make a list of everyone you need to buy for with ideas of things you want to buy them. The earlier you make this list, the more time you have to do these next two things…

4. Search online. Look online to see who is having the best sales or to see if you can find something cheaper without leaving your house. Just remember that online sales start Cyber Monday, the Monday after Black Friday.

3. Cut Coupons. You have your list; now start searching around for deals. Do coupon searches in your local papers and online. Organize them according to store or product and whatever you do, don’t leave them at home.

2. Keep your hands in your pockets. Large crowds are like all-you-can-eat buffet bars for petty thiefs. Be aware and keep your money someplace that other people, like pick pockets, can’t get to it.

1. Don’t get trampled. Avoiding “death by crowd” is always a good idea.
